Finding & unlocking locations

The map is the heart of Locatour. Here’s how locations work and how you open up more of them.

Every Locatour location is a real, public, non-commercial place — a park, a lookout, a reserve, a beach, a trail, a swimming hole, a monument. They’re chosen because they’re worth visiting and free for everyone to enjoy.

Each place is tagged by category — hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking, birdwatching, photography, cycling, picnicking, swimming — so you can find the kinds of outings you like. Tap any pin to see what a place offers, including helpful details like accessibility, amenities, and whether it’s family- or dog-friendly, where we have them.

You don’t start with the whole world unlocked — and that’s the point.

As you level up, more locations become visible and reachable. Easy, everyday, well-serviced places are open to everyone from the start. The further you progress, the more remote, special, and hidden places appear on your map.

Why gate places this way? Two reasons:

  • It keeps discovery exciting. There’s always a next tier of places to work toward.
  • It protects fragile places. The most delicate spots open up gradually, to people who’ve shown they’re invested explorers — so they’re never overwhelmed. This is the heart of Hidden locations.

The full picture of how levels and location difficulty fit together is in Levels, tiers & progression.

When you check in at a place, you earn experience. More remote and harder-to-reach places reward more than easy, popular ones — they ask more of you, so they give more back.

You can check in at the same place again after a cooldown period, so there’s always a reason to keep moving and discover somewhere new rather than farming one spot.

  • Browse by interest. Filter the map to the categories you love.
  • Look to the edges. As you level, glance at the places that have newly appeared — they’re your next mission.
  • Mix it up. Visiting a variety of places (not just one) is the fastest, most rewarding way to play.
